The US special envoy for human rights in North Korea, Jay Lefkowitz, pressed China on Thursday to put more pressure on North Korea to end human rights abuses. During a panel discussion at the United Nations he said "the Chinese government needs to recognize that the international community does not tolerate brutal dictatorship," Reuters reported. "The Chinese government needs to understand that North Korea is not helping it in the international community." His comments followed the release of a report by the US Committee for Human Rights in North Korea which accused China of being "inhospitable" to the refugees in many ways, including detention, allowing forced repatriation, and turning a blind eye to trafficking in women.
