US retailers on China’s internet

Walmart is about to launch a website for its Sam’s Club stores in China. Gap will open a Chinese online sales site next month. Japan’s Uniqlo launched an e-commerce business in China last year.
Adidas opened an online store in August on Taobao, China’s dominant internet marketplace.
Coach, the US handbag retailer, intends to open an online store in China next year.
Growth in China’s e-commerce market is expected to take off, according to iResearch. Online retail sales grew 117% last year to US$39 billion.
"About two-thirds of Chinese have been online for three years or less, and half for less than two – and in the past it has taken about three years for an internet user to become an online shopper," said consulting firm McKinsey in a recent report, according to the Financial Times. "Assuming that this conversion continues, tens of millions of new e-commerce consumers could be just around the corner.”
