US Trade Representative Susan Schwab is visiting China for the first time since her appointment. Schwab will "urge more progress by China" on its WTO accession commitments and seek to help to restart the Doha Round of negotiations, her office said in a statement reported by international media. The Doha Round collapsed after Europe and the US failed to agree on farm tariffs and subsidies. Her visit to China is the last leg of an Asian tour that took her to Malaysia and a meeting with the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations that resulted in a pledge by the two sides to continue close cooperation on all WTO issues and to put the Doha Development Round "back on track before the end of 2006".
