A US official warned Taiwan that a US pledge to assist the island in defending itself was not a license to resist dialogue with mainland China. David Keegan, deputy director of the American Institute in Taiwan � the de facto US embassy on the island � reiterated US support for Taiwan, but urged the island to resume talks with Beijing to resolve the cross-Strait issue.
