US$124 million more for rural areas

China will spend US$124 million more on rural areas in 2006, state media reported, citing Ministry of Finance sources. The government will shift the focus of infrastructure construction from urban to rural areas this year, focusing on implementing agricultural projects. China has increased spending on the countryside, spending US$37.5 billion on rural development in 2005, up 50% since 2002. In addition to direct financial support, China has already ended the agricultural tax, which amounts to US$2.75 billion a year.
