Vatican sends China signal

Though he did not name the Mainland, when Pope Benedict XVI invited countries that don't have diplomatic relations with the Vatican to build ties soon, many say the invitation was targeted at the Mainland and could complicate the Holy See's relations with Taiwan. Media reports say Benedict made the comments in a speech to diplomats of the 174 countries accredited to the Holy See. Beijing has said the Mainland was willing to build ties with the Vatican if Benedict breaks ties with Taiwan.
