China has dropped its previous demand for funding from the developed world to help the country battle climate change, the Financial Times reported. Chinese Vice-Foreign Minister He Yafei said in an interview that while China believed that poorer nations should be funded from richer countries, China itself would not expect money from the US and the UK. "Financial resources for the efforts of developing countries [to combat climate change are] a legal obligation. That does not mean China will take a share – probably not . . . we do not expect money will flow from the US, UK [and others] to China," he said. But He remained firm on China’s stance of refusing to allow other nations to monitor and report on the country’s progress at meeting its climate change targets. "This is a matter of principles," he said. He warned leaders against using China as a scapegoat if a deal at the Copenhagen summit failed. "I know people will say if there is no deal that China is to blame. This is a trick played by the developed countries. They have to look at their own position and can’t use China as an excuse. That is not fair," he said.
