In May, Symantec, best known for its Norton antivirus software, released a family of products aimed at protecting smartphones. Now more than one million smartphones in China have been struck by a "Zombie" virus – hijacking address books and racking up charges by sending a barrage of text messages.
The attack hijacks a user’s SIM card details and sends it to the hackers, which then send non-stop text messages, containing virus-ridden links for games and software, to the victim’s contacts.
Reports state the source of the virus is believed to have started from an antivirus application.
Mobiledia reports wireless carriers in China are working to reduce the number of infected messages, but telecom experts believe an updated virus may start sending fewer messages, making it more difficult for victims to notice any suspicious activity.
