VisionChina to buy Digital Media Group for $160m

VisionChina Media will buy Shanghai’s Digital Media Group for US$160 million, the Wall Street Journal reported. Through the deal, VisionChina, which operates digital television displays on buses and other public areas, will gain access to digital television networks in domestic subway systems. Digital Media Group has the rights to sell advertising space on digital TV screens in subway stations in Shanghai and eight other cities. VisionChina had 82,349 digital TV displays on public transportation systems in 18 major Chinese cities at the end of June, while Digital Media Group operates 35,000 digital TV displays on 32 subway and rail lines in China, including major lines in Shanghai and Beijing. The deal is slated to close in the first quarter of 2010, just in time for VisionChina to sell advertising space during the Shanghai World Expo.
