Vitamin C over-capacity

China is finding itself with a garlic shortage and a Vitamin C glut. Now something is being done about the Vitamin C mountain.

According to a survey released by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), China’s production capacity of vitamin C is seriously excessive.

The survey jointly conducted by the NDRC and Ministry of Industry and Information Technology showed that the total production capacity of existing domestic vitamin C facilities in China, under construction or proposed, provides more than 80,000 metric tons. And it is estimated that by the end of 2010, the production capacity of vitamin C will reach 180,000 tons, and in 2012, the figure will be more than 200,000 tons.

 
At present, the global consumption of vitamin C totals around 100,000 tons while China’s consumption is about 20,000. The global production capacity of Vitamin C is about 150,000 tons.

said that China holds the world’s majority of vitamin C market share.
