Water redirected from the Yangtze River’s largest tributary will soon finally reach Beijing by way of the the massive South-to-North Water Diversion Project, The New York Times reported, citing the state-owned Beijing Times. The water, which began flowing more than 800 miles north on December 12, is meant to quench a third of the capital’s annual thirst. But some experts say that the costly and ambitious endeavor cannot serve as a long-term solution, since Beijing is likely to continue facing severe water shortages due to the region’s surging population and economy feeding demand and pollution degrading available supplies.
