Wealth gap widens

The wealth gap between the nation's east and west has widened since the "Go West" campaign to develop western China was introduced in 2000, the South China Morning Post reported, citing a study carried out at Xian's Northwest University. Although the west's GDP grew 12% in 2004 after several years of advancement in the region, the study found that the disparity in east-west per capita GDP grew between 2000 and 2003. Researchers said profits from resources projects went to central government and the region did not benefit much from energy projects.
