What do Chinese MBA students really think of business?

[photopress:MBA_aspen.jpg,full,alignright]An excellent article by Catherine Walter dealing with that important question.

In 2007, the McKinsey Quarterly reported intensifying competition for talent globally would have a major effect on companies over the next five years. The war for talent is nothing new for companies doing business in China.

Studies by American Chambers of Commerce in China show that a skills shortage is one of the top challenges for US companies operating there.

Companies vying for the attention of future MBA graduates from top schools across China should take note of a new study recently released by the Aspen Institute’s Business and Society Program, Where Will They Lead? 2008 which shows MBA students’ attitudes toward the role of business in society.

The results suggest that good CSR may be an effective strategy in luring and retaining top talent.

The central theme that emerged from the findings is that students care about a company’s reputation and the CSR (corporate social responsibility, also called corporate responsibility, corporate citizenship, and responsible business) practices of employers.

95% of respondents agree that a company’s reputation is important in choosing a future employer.
They also believe that a good reputation and fulfilling social responsibility go hand in hand.
Approximately 78% think that the greatest benefit of a company fulfilling its social responsibilities is a better public image/reputation.

Good CSR is clearly a key consideration for China’s top talent; however students expect that it may be hard to come by. Read the full report HERE and the Aspen Institute’s presentation HERE.
