Wikipedia back offline

[photopress:wikipedia.jpg, full, alignright]There are several reports that Wikipedia is no longer accessible from China. It is just about a week since connection was reopened. Now it has closed again. No one is sure why.

Yuan Mingli, 33, a software engineer in Shanghai who has contributed articles on computer science and Chinese historical figures to the site, said, ‘It was great news for us. China’s internet users are not different from other countries’ users. Wikipedia is an important source of information for us.’

Beijing blocked access to the English and Chinese versions of Wikipedia in October last year, possibly because of coverage of sensitive topics.

As far as is known the site’s English version was unblocked first, while the Chinese version became available late last week. Now both seem to be inaccessible again in China.
