Beijing’s first foreign-funded sewage treatment facility constructed on the build-operate- transfer model started operation in December. The Yn200m facility, which involves investment from Golden State (Holding) Group Corp of the US and Beijing Economy and Technology Investment Co, is able to handle 100,000 tonnes of wastewater a day.
Six more large-scale projects for sewage treatment are to start in the next five years, reported Xinhua. By 2006, 90 per cent of the city’s wastewater will be treated, compared with 49 per cent today.
Total investment in water resources stood at Yn40.1bn in 2001, said China’s minister of water resources,Wang Shucheng. During the year, China said that 1.47m hectares of land was newly irrigated.
