World powers and members of the UN Security Council quickly condemned North Korea's nuclear test yesterday. China and the US both stated their opposition – China expressed "resolute opposition" according to state media – and Security Council members said they would push for more sanctions after Pyongyang announced it had exploded a device underground. Markets in Seoul and Hong Kong tumbled after news of the rougue state's first test of a nuclear device broke around midday, but media reports were dominated by the unanimous condemnation of the move. Pyongyang's Korean Central News Agency described the test as "a historic event", claiming it "greatly encouraged and pleased the Korea People's Army and people that have wished to have a powerful self-reliant defence capability," the South China Morning Post reported.
