The WTO issued an interim ruling stating that the US import ban on Chinese poultry violated food safety and most-favored-nation (MFN) treatment under WTO guidelines, state media reported. The US targeted Chinese poultry through section 727 of the Omnibus Appropriations Act of 2009, which bans the use of government funds towards establising a rule allowing the import of Chinese poultry, but the 2009 law has already ceased to be in effect, with no guarantee that the WTO ruling would apply to its successor. "We think the US will not try to impose a similar ban in the next fiscal year, since it would be regarded as open defiance of the latest WTO ruling," said a Ministry of Commerce official.
