President Xi Jinping hosted a reception of multinational executives and government officials on Thursday, the Financial Times reports, calling on businesses to side with China in opposition to protectionist tactics from the White House.
Xi advertised China to the CEOs as a strong investment, particularly with respect to his trademark Belt and Road project. State television broadcast the meeting in a six-minute montage, showing the guests applauding Xi’s demonstration and praising China’s development.
“The great door of China’s opening will not close, it will only get bigger and more open,” said Xi during his address, adding that “China will continue to greatly ease market access” and “strengthen the protection of intellectual property rights.”
No particular policies or commitments were outlined during the summit, though China has made several significant policy changes in recent weeks regarding market liberalisation and reform, including lifting foreign ownership caps in key auto and finance industries.
