President Xi Jinping made a high-profile visit to party mouthpiece People’s Daily, state news agency Xinhua and state broadcaster CCTV at the weekend, stressing to editors and reporters that “media run by the party and the government are the propaganda fronts and must have the party as their family name,” the Associated Press reported. Willy Lam, a scholar of Chinese politics at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, called the visits part of a “very heavy-handed ideological campaign to drive home the point of total loyalty to the party core,” increasingly defined as Xi himself.
