Xi orders terrorism crackdown after knife killings

China’s President Xi Jinping ordered a crackdown on “violent terrorist activities” following a mass knife attack at a train station in Kunming on March 1 in which 33 people died, Bloomberg reported. Local officials in the southwestern city said evidence at the scene showed it was a terrorist attack orchestrated by Xinjiang separatist forces, according to the state-run Xinhua News Agency. The assault, days before the annual meeting of the legislature in Beijing, highlights increasing tensions between the state and some ethnic groups including the mostly Muslim Uighur minority in Xinjiang.
