Zijin must close Shanghang plant after wastewater leak

The Zijin Mining Group (601899.SH, 2899.HK) is being forced to close its copper plant in Shanghang, Fujian province for an indefinite period of time after a wastewater leak, Bloomberg reported, citing state media. The plant was closed temporarily as of last week, but Zijin has had continued difficulty repairing the damage – local residents told reporters that leaks continued over the weekend. According to a Chinese language report, a leak from the plant’s copper wastewater holding pool released 9,100 cubic meters of waste into a major waterway, the Ting River. In a statement to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, Zijin said that a plant manager, a deputy plant manager and the environmental safety officer have been detained by police. The Fujian government has said it will take legal action against the mining company. Zijin stock has declined to a 17-month low following the news.
