Pi Qiansheng, responsible for overseeing the Binhai New Area industrial zone outside of Tianjin, was relieved of his duties and expelled from the Communist Party for corruption. The party’s Central Commission for Discipline Inspection said that Pi had taken bribes.
Liaoning economic belt plan approved
The State Council has moved forward with plans to establish an economic belt in coastal Liaoning province. The zone will cover 700 square kilometers, and promote ship building, petroleum refining, advanced equipment manufacturing, processing of raw materials, high-tech and agricultural processing.
New economic zone to span Shaanxi, Gansu
The State Council Information Office will build an inland regional economic zone spanning the northwestern provinces of Shaanxi and Gansu. The new Guanzhong-Tianshui Economic Zone Development Program will cover 79,800 square kilometers. It will serve as a manufacturing and industrial base for modern agricultural technology.
CNOOC builds industrial zone in Ningde
China National Offshore Oil Corp (CNOOC), the country’s biggest offshore oil and gas producer, is building an industrial zone in Ningde City, Fujian province. CNOOC plans to set up a large petrochemical industrial base, a commercial petroleum storage base, a refined oil storage base, a shipbuilding base and an offshore oil industrial base.
Chengdu builds information center
Chengdu has begun construction of the China Western Information Center in the Chengdu High-Tech Zone. The information center, one of the key post-quake communications facility projects, will include a national western information disaster backup base, an information security center and a call center. It will serve as a hub for communications and information processing in southwestern China.
Wuhan seeks semiconductor development
Wuhan, known as China’s "Optics Valley," has presented a plan to turn Wuhan East Lake High-Tech Zone into China’s semiconductor capital. By the end of next year, the city intends to strengthen its capabilities in mobile communications, integrated circuit board fabrication, semiconductor lighting technology, and digital TV and display development.
