Taiwan’s Acer, currently the world’s number two computer producer, aims to overtake Hewlett-Packard as the world’s number one. If it achieves the feat, it would be because of increased demand in China.
China figures prominently in Acer’s plans because this year it will earn a quarter of its profits in China, up 5% from 2009.
Acer’s tie-up in August with the Founder Group in China allows Acer to use the Founder brand name for seven years, for a fee of US$7 million.
Oliver Ahrens, Acer China president, believes that China will soon pass the United States as the biggest market for Acer. He also thinks Acer should end up as the second most powerful computer firm in China, with China’s Lenovo in first place.
Asia Pacific Business and Technology reports Acer commands some 13% of the world market, moving ahead of Dell to the number two position.
