African minerals, real death penalty rates, Hepatitis B patients and enlisting university graduates

Some China-related numbers you may have missed:

$7b: The value of a mining deal between Guinea’s military regime and a little-known Chinese company called China International Fund for access to bauxite and other minerals.

70%: The percent of death penalty verdicts in China that are not carried out due to post-trial intervention. The government passes out 140 death sentences each week, yet only has 2,000 executions a year.

30%: The percentage of Hepatitis B patients in China who do not stick to long-term medical treatment due to lack of money. Doctors recommend taking oral medication for two years.

130k: The number of university graduates who enlisted in the People’s Liberation Army in the winter of 2009, the most in China’s history.
