While China Air said in a statement that it and Cathay Pacific would "continue to explore opportunities to develop closer cooperation in various business and operational areas", both airlines denied a South China Morning Post report saying the two were in merger talks. Cathay has sought greater mainland presence, but analysts say Beijing is unlikely to cede control of Air China.
