Attack on activist

The beating of a grassroots activist Lu Banglie in southern China which left him "lifeless" over the weekend spotlighted the problems in implementing limited democratic reforms allowed by Beijing at the village level, the Financial Times reported, quoting a journalist who travelled with Lu. Lu was dragged from a car by a small gang outside the village of Taishi, where he had been advising residents on challenging what they believe was a rigged local election. Lu is now feared dead.
