Beijing International Airport is already approaching full capacity a little over two years after its construction was completed. Last year passenger volume reached 24m, while capacity by 2005 is set to reach only 27m, said China Youth Daily.
Heightened security measures at the airport are adding to the capacity problems. The newspaper said that on January 25 it took passengers about two hours to complete all check-in and security procedures.
Nationally, China’s airlines are expected to carry 83m passengers in 2002. This would be an increase of 10.3 per cent from the previous year, reported Shanghai Daily.
