China’s central government has blasted ride-hailing giant Didi Chuxing after reports emerged over the weekend that a second passenger had allegedly been killed by a driver while using the company’s carpool service, Caixin reports.
Didi has suspended its Hitch service across China, but this move has failed to satisfy Chinese officials. Executives from Didi attended meetings with public security and transport officials in both Beijing and Tianjin on Sunday, and were told that they bore “unshirkable responsibility” for the deaths and must implement “thorough reform” to its services.
The death of the passenger in the eastern Chinese city of Wenzhou has also shaken public confidence in the company, which is valued at $56 billion and has a user base of 550 million people.
