The city of Beijing has done away with the distinction between housing for foreigners and local people, reported South China Morning Post. From the beginning of September, foreigners can buy houses and apartments anywhere in the city, said a land and bureau property official. The capital followed other major cities, including Shanghai, in unifying the housing market in accordance with the terms of China's WTO accession.
The distinction between the two types of accommodation enabled the state to closely watch foreigners and also meant that landlords could charge them higher prices.
