Beijing 'firmly opposes' US-Taiwan arms deals

China’s Foreign Ministry said Beijing is "firmly opposed" to US arms sales to Taiwan, after a US official said Washington was considering new sales to the island, Reuters reported. US Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Defense Trade Robert Kovac said that the Obama administration was considering selling arms, including designs for diesel-electric submarines, to Taipei. Jiang Yu, a spokeswoman for China’s Foreign Ministry, urged the US not to go ahead with the sales in order to "maintain the sound development of Sino-US relations, as well as cross-strait relations." US media reports indicate that Taiwan had also requested F-16 fighter jets and Patriot missiles from the US.
