China Unicom announced that it had sold more than 100,000 iPhones in China since officially launching the smartphones on October 30, the Wall Street Journal reported. The numbers indicate that sales may be accelerating – Unicom said that only 5,000 phones were sold in the first four days after the launch – but analysts said sales remained disappointing. Unicom has been criticized for the high price of its iPhone, which at between US$730 and US$1,020 is more expensive than gray-market devices; the phones also have certain connectivity functions disabled to comply with domestic regulations. However, some analysts said that users of gray-market iPhones switching to the Unicom network could provide a boost to its business.
