China's top government officials did not visit Nanjing this year to commemerate the 70th anniversary of the Nanking Massacre, still a major source of resentment for most Chinese, AP reported. The incident, also known as "the Rape of Nanking," whose death toll is one of the major points of contention between the two countries, was marked across the country by sounding air-raid sirens and holding moments of silence, a departure from previous years where passion and often vitriolic speeches were the norm. Anti-Japanese protests have sprung up in China as recently as 2005.
