next year The joint venture between BMW of Germany and China Brilliance Automotive Holdings expects to receive its production licence soon and to begin production of BMW cars in China early next year, South China Morning Post said. China Brilliance is in legal dispute with its former chairman, who is suing the firm over changes in its ownership structure, but BMW said this was not affecting progress. However, the government has taken two years to consider the company's application for a production licence, while Honda Motor of Japan was granted a licence within one year. BMW said it wished that the process had been quicker.
The joint venture in Shenyang, Liaoning province, would be capable of producing the full range of BMW models, though initial annual production would be 20,000-30,000 of the smaller Series 3 model. These would cost lest than Yn400,000 apiece, against Yn560,000 and Yn630,000 respectively for the imported 318i and 325i models.
