It appears that the Olympic mascots, those friendly fuwas, are still brisk business. On my way from the office to the subway each night I’ve been passing through the Viva Beijing mall at the Guangzhou R&F mixed-use complex, where I’ve seen massive lines of people queued up to buy the stuffed fuwas, presumably to take back to their hometowns for the Chinese New Year holiday.
The Olympics were all well and good. A bit anti-climactic in my opinion, though how could it ever live up to all the hype? But that was August, let’s move on now. Enough with the Olympic television spots still playing on the subways. And enough of those fuwas. Yes, they were cute. Yes, my nieces all have a complete set (purchased last minute in the Beijing capital airport — I know I’m a terrible uncle). But let’s put this to rest once and for all in the year of the Ox.
Happy New Year.
