China backs Iran sanctions

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has announced that the permanent members of the UN Security Council, including China, have reached a draft accord to impose sanctions on Iran, reported Bloomberg. The resolution, designed to convince Iran to abandon its nuclear program, would boost an arms embargo, restrict the international actions of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps and grant greater authority to seize Iranian cargoes suspected of having connections to the country’s nuclear program. Although China and Russia have opposed the sanctions for months, moves by Russian officials towards alignment with the US meant that China would have had to stand alone in opposing sanctions. With China’s support, the US was able to create a "strong draft" of the sanctions resolution.
