China Eastern mergers in September

Yunnan Airlines and China Northwest Airlines would soon start operating as part of China Eastern, Reuters quoted an Eastern official as saying. The change would occur in September if the State Council gave its approval in August. However it would take the company at least a year to finish amalgamating the assets of profitable Yunnan and debt-laden Northwest.

The move is part of a government-sponsored restructuring of the industry that will merge nine airlines into three.
