China faces sugar shortage

As China's sugar demand is expected to exceed supply by 1m tons due to production shortfalls blamed on poor weather, it will likely import the same volume of sugar in 2005 as it did in 2004. Last year, China imported 1.18m tons of sugar, compared to 672,000 tons in 2003.
