Chinese media and officials voiced their support for the results of yesterday’s historic summit in Singapore between President Donald Trump and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un, reports Reuters, using the opportunity to suggest an easing of economic pressure on the isolated Asian nation.
Speaking on state television, Foreign Minister Wang Yi said: “History has been made as leaders of both countries could sit together to engage in equal dialogue. China both welcomes and supports that.”
A spokesman for the Foreign Ministry said that “the UN Security Council resolutions that have been passed say that if North Korea respects and acts in accordance with the resolutions, then sanction measures can be adjusted, including to pause or remove the relevant sanctions.” The Communist Party’s media outlet, The Global Times, also wrote that the time was right to consider “an appropriate reduction of the sanctions.”
In his address, President Trump praised the actions and leadership of President Xi Jinping during recent negotiations and said the deal will be “a great thing for China.”
