China hammers train ticket scalpers

Railway authorities are preparing for a real-name ticket system to end scalping during the upcoming Spring Festival rush. Although many have called for such a system for years, there are still doubts about its feasibility.

Railway authorities are preparing for a real-name ticket system to end scalping during the upcoming Spring Festival rush. Although many have called for such a system for years, there are still doubts about its feasibility.

Chinese authorities warned passengers this week to purchase tickets from railway stations or travel agencies, instead of scalpers.

The Ministry of Railways said holiday passengers will be required to show their ID card when buying a train ticket at any of 37 rail stations in Guangdong, Sichuan, Hunan and Guizhou provinces.

A ticket may only be purchased with an ID card.
Examiner.com states the system will take effect from Jan. 30 to March 30. Spring Festival falls on Feb. 14 this year.
