China produces 83 per cent of the world's tractors, 70 per cent of its silk and half of its television sets, according to a recently published report by the Great Wall Company Research Institute. It also makes 29 per cent of the world's colour televisions, producing 39.4m units, and 14.4m washing machines, 24 per cent of the global total.
The report, quoted by Beijing Youth Daily, said China was now the fourth-largest manufacturer in the world and the leading producer of more than 100 items. However, it concluded that few of these goods carry a Chinese brand because of poor distribution systems and management failings.
