Chinese officials warned they would oppose any effort by the US to impose limits on textile exports when all global quotas are lifted next year. The comments, made to the New York Times, came ahead of a visit to Beijing next week by Grant Aldonas, the US Commerce Department's under secretary for international trade. The Bush administration is hoping to persuade Beijing to agree to limits in areas where US manufacturers have been strong, like trousers and knit shirts, the Times said. A recent study by the WTO found that China was likely to be the biggest winner when the 30-year-old quota system is lifted on January 1, 2005.
