China to 'vigorously' develop a cleaner economy

China has vowed to "vigorously" develop a cleaner economy by using energy more efficiently and investing in research and development projects to cut carbon emissions, Bloomberg reported, citing local media. Hu Jintao’s special envoy Xie Zhenhua said climate change represents a threat to Chinese economic development, and regulations should be further strengthened to meet targets. "The scale of economic destruction would be equivalent to that of the two world wars and the Great Depression combined," Xie said. "Human beings and the Earth cannot afford such disasters."
