China-US maritime pact signed

China and the US signed a maritime agreement that will open Chinese markets to US shipping companies. US Transportation Secretary Norm Mineta touted the pact as putting US shipping companies "where the business is, closer to their markets and their customers."

The cargo container between China and the US is higher than between any other two countries in the world. According to US statistics, more than 3.2 million containers make the trans-Pacific journey each year.
