China’s top Hong Kong official, Wang Zhimin, made a statement that the arrest of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou was “the world’s biggest advertisement for Huawei’s 5G technology,” reported the South China Morning Post.
“Now my friends and I are using Huawei phones and we are proud of our nation’s technological leadership. I believe Hong Kong will play a more important role as the nation innovates,” Wang said at a forum on the outcome of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).
Meng was arrested at the beginning of December in Vancouver, on the basis of an extradition request from the US on fraud charges relating to alleged breaches of sanctions again Iran.
Wang also made remarks about the rapid advancement of China’s technological development and the obstacles the nation has had to overcome compared to other high-tech leaders, shedding positive light on China’s global leadership in technology.
