A Chinese state-owned enterprise official and engineer being investigated for possible violations of Communist Party discipline or state laws has died after he “suffered an accident” while in detention, The New York Times reported, citing state media. According to reports, The People’s Procuratorate of Wenzhou said Yu Qiyi, chief engineer of the Wenzhou Industry Investment Group, was being investigated for irregularities during the approval process for a local land project. He was under a kind of detention called shuanggui, a process where, “Party and government officials are asked to confess to wrongdoings.” Yu’s cause of death is listed as drowning.
