Frederick Warne, the British publisher and copyright owner of the illustrations in the Peter Rabbit series of books written by Beatrix Potter, has obtained a favourable ruling from the Beijing Xicheng district local government. Four books containing some of these illustrations that were published by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Press were ruled to infringe its copyright. China Daily said the sale of the books had been prohibited and the press ordered to pay an administrative penalty of Yn350,000.
The press has responded by filing a suit of its own against Frederick Warne in the Beijing First Intermediate People's Court, which has not yet been heard.
