China has released a draft of a food safety law that would introduce financial and criminal penalties, including possible life sentences, on makers of unsafe food products, the Christian Science Monitor reported, citing state media. The draft law, which is aimed at improving standards in an industry that has come under fire internationally, was welcomed by the World Health Organization, though a representative of the health body noted that it does not cover basic agricultural products. Other commentators have said that China should concentrate on education about food safety standards in addition to imposing penalties. The draft will be submitted to the legislature for consideration on May 20.
