A special team of geologists is conducting surveys along the route of the railway line to Lhasa in Tibet to assess earthquake risks and propose counter-measures, South China Morning Post reported. The project team, from the China Geology and Science College, was called into action after a major earthquake, registering 8.1 on the Richter scale, cut across the route, raising the ground surface by up to 1.5 metres.
The geologist in charge of the team said that the route passes over an area of frozen earth that is particularly prone to earthquakes and tremors, which could cut the line at any time. The team’s findings and recom-mendations are being submitted to the Ministry of Railways so that the builders of the line can take the risks into account when designing bridges and tunnels.
