Citing sources at the Guangzhou municipal government planning bureau, local newspapers have reported that a proposed new regional express rail link between Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hong Kong will start at Panyu on the south side of the city and pass through Nansha before crossing the Pearl River estuary to Dongguan, Shenzhen and Hong Kong. The river crossing would probably be via a tunnel.
South China Morning Post said that Hong Kong officials were surprised by the reports since the proposed route had not been considered by the consultation bodies set up to consider transport links between Hong Kong and the mainland. The newspaper added that the route was consistent with Guangzhou’s plans to build a deepwater port and other heavy industrial facilities at Nansha.
