Google (GOOG.NASDAQ) reversed its position on the unavailability of its search services in China on Tuesday, blaming the Chinese "Great Firewall" rather than a flaw in its own servers, the Financial Times reported. Even harmless searches conducted on Tuesday evening produced browser errors. Google initially blamed the errors on a technical change in its search queries that confused the Chinese "Great Firewall" into thinking that all Google searches were conducted by Radio Free Asia, an organization banned on the mainland. However, the company later revealed that the technical change occurred a week ago and therefore problems with its searches could only be attributable to a change in China’s internet filter, a possible reaction to Google’s recent decision to stop censoring its searches and close its mainland site.
